Pay
$55–$175 per hour
Location
Remote, United States only
Work
Per funded assignment

One application puts you in our expert pool. When a funded client project needs your field, we offer you the assignment; you review the claims our automated checks could not settle.

Fields we are building now

  • Finance, tax and compliance: anti-money-laundering, sanctions and business verification; securities filings and financial data; tax; insurance and actuarial work.
  • Law and intellectual property: legal research by practice area; patents and trademarks.
  • Health and life sciences: physicians, nurses and nurse practitioners; pharmacy and drug safety; medical coding and billing; clinical research and regulatory affairs.
  • Science and engineering: biomedical and life-science research; chemistry and toxicology; physics; licensed professional engineering; earth science, seismology and geospatial analysis.
  • Aviation, energy and infrastructure: aircraft, operator and pilot records; flight instruction and remote-pilot operations; nuclear and power engineering.
  • Security and technology: cybersecurity; evaluation and measurement.
  • Trade and supply chain: customs brokerage, export-control compliance and supply-chain provenance.
  • Property, education and publishing: real estate and title; academic credentials and registrar records; academic publishing and research integrity.
  • Languages: professional translators and interpreters, working from within the United States.

Tell us your field and your credentials when you apply. We verify each credential with the body that issued it, with your consent, and offer you assignments only in the field you are verified for.

What you’ll do

  • Review claims in your field that our automated checks could not settle: whether a record, a credential, a citation or a figure matches its official source.
  • Decide verified, not verified or not decidable, with a short written rationale and the sources you used.
  • With experience, serve as a second reviewer on disputed decisions and write answer keys for your field (all paid).

We would much rather you say “not decidable” than guess. You do not give professional advice to anyone: your decisions are about whether a claim matches its official source.

You have

  • A current licence, certification or advanced degree in one of the fields above, from a body we can verify.
  • Hands-on experience with the official sources in your field, and a clear sense of their limits.
  • Care, and the discipline to say “not decidable” when the record doesn’t settle it.
  • Fluent written English (and, for language work, professional command of your other working language).

Pay

  • $55–$175 per hour (W-2).
  • Your rate depends on your field and credential. Where your field has its own role on this page, that role’s range applies. Otherwise: $55–$85 for certified analysts and specialists; $75–$110 for PhD scientists and researchers; $95–$130 for other licensed professionals, such as professional engineers, registered patent agents, CPAs and enrolled agents; and $120–$175 for physicians and attorneys. Everyone at the same level in the same field starts at the same rate.
  • Pay is hourly, for all time worked. It is never per piece.
  • Quality bonus: an extra 15% of your pay for an assignment’s hours when your accuracy on its answer-keyed check items is at least 95% and none of your decisions on it is reversed in our second review. It is paid with your regular pay on the next payday.
  • Hard-to-fill assignments may carry a premium of up to 25%, stated in the offer before you accept it.
  • The range is the pay we reasonably expect to offer. Everyone at the same level starts at the same rate.
  • Benefits: paid sick leave as required by law; workers’ compensation; reimbursement of necessary remote-work expenses. Any other benefits are stated in the offer.

How the work is offered

  • Work is offered per assignment when customer projects are funded; there are no guaranteed hours; you choose which assignments to accept. When there is no assignment, there is no work and no pay obligation.
  • Each offer states the task, an estimated time, the deadline and your hourly rate. Accept or decline it with no penalty.
  • You are paid for every hour you work on an accepted assignment, including any time beyond the estimate, with a minimum of one paid hour per accepted assignment.
  • Training, the qualification assessment and quality-check tasks are paid at your rate.
  • Part-time W-2 employment, not gig or 1099 work: your employer is I Am Violet Inc. (dba Metis Foundry), and you are paid through our payroll provider. Variable hours, with no on-call duty and no scheduled shifts.
  • Where we are: we are building our expert pool now. Onboarding and the paid qualification assessment begin when the first customer projects are funded, and we will tell you honestly when that is.

Location and eligibility

  • Must reside in and perform all work from within the United States; U.S. work authorization required.
  • You must be authorized to work in the United States for the full period of each assignment. We do not sponsor visas.
  • F-1 students may apply only with CPT or OPT authorization that covers this work. Please check with your international student office first.
  • If you hold a university appointment, fellowship or assistantship, you are responsible for confirming that it allows outside paid work. Metis work must not use university time, equipment or confidential information.
  • A background check is run only for roles or assignments that need one, after a conditional offer and with your written authorization.

Export-controlled assignments. Some future assignments, for example in defence, geospatial or aerospace work, may involve export-controlled (ITAR/EAR) technical data. Those assignments will be offered only to U.S. persons as defined in 22 CFR 120.62: U.S. citizens and nationals, lawful permanent residents, and people granted refugee or asylum status. The reason is that Metis does not hold export licences to share such data with anyone else. We check this only for those assignments, separately from employment-eligibility verification. All other assignments are open to everyone who meets the requirements above.

How we verify

  • We check your degree or enrollment, and your professional credentials, with the bodies that issue them. We do this only with your written consent.
  • We verify your identity.
  • You take a paid qualification assessment in your field; the passing score is 95%.
  • All work happens inside the secure Metis portal: no downloads, no personal AI tools on customer material, and no direct contact with customers.
  • Your decisions are delivered under a Metis reviewer ID together with your verified credentials. Your name is shown only with your written consent.

How to apply

Apply online and choose how you are interviewed: by voice (with live captions) or in writing with Themis, Metis Foundry’s AI interviewer, or with a person. Themis is an AI; it asks your permission before it transcribes or saves any answer, we keep no audio recording, and a person makes every decision. Advisory scores and a written recommendation are produced only if you allow them. How the AI interview works.

Prefer email? Email paul@rocketship.co with the subject “Application: Expert Reviewer, Expert Network (All Fields)”. Attach your CV and list your credential identifiers (for example your licence or certification, who issued it and the state). A person reviews every email application; no AI is used.

Please don’t send your Social Security number, bank details, date of birth, transcripts, photos of ID documents, health information, or anything confidential that belongs to a current or former employer, client or university. We will ask for your consent before any verification.
